Anna is tired of the discomfort and pain this all causes, so one Saturday morning, she hides. On Saturday, the “weaving aunties” come to the house and put everyone’s braids back in. In the second chapter, we learn that Anna hates the weekly ritual that all of her female family members take part in – on Friday nights they sit together and take their hair out of their braids, comb out the knots, and wash their hair. But when she sees the size of the stadium, and the crowd, stage fright sets in until Double and Trouble come to the rescue. Anna is chosen to sing for the guest at an event at the National Stadium, and she excitedly sings her new “president song” all the time. The first story finds Anna attending school for the first time and the community excitedly preparing for a visit from a foreign dignitary. What did you like about the book? As with other books in the series, Hooray for Anna Hibiscus! consists of four separate but interconnected stories about a little Nigerian girl who lives in a big gated compound with her extended family – paternal grandparents, multiple aunties and uncles and cousins, and Anna’s own nuclear family, which includes her Nigerian father and white Canadian mother, and her twin baby brothers Double and Trouble.
